The High Court on Monday upheld the Dhaka Divisional Commissioner’s order that rejected an appeal filed by suspended Gazipur City Corporation mayor Zahangir Alam challenging the legality of cancellation of his nomination papers for the mayoral post in Gazipur city elections slated for May 25.
The bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Muhammad Mahbub Ul Islam passed an order rejecting summarily the writ petition filed by Zahangir on Sunday.
The court observed that Zahangir was disqualified as mayoral candidate as he was a loan defaulter.
Zahangir’ lawyer MK Rahman told reporters that his client would appeal against the High Court order.
On April 30, the returning officer for the Gazipur mayoral election cancelled his nomination paper over loan default.
Zahangir sought nomination from the ruling Awami League but failed to get the party ticket. He later submitted a nomination paper to run as an independent candidate in the election.
The ruling party nominated its Gazipur city unit president Azmat Ullah Khan as the mayoral candidate.
