Dr Yunus’ lawyer threatens to boycott court

Testimony in labour law violation case against Nobel laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus and three others started.

Dhaka Third Labour Tribunal comprising Judge Begum Sheikh Marina Sultana started testimony on Tuesday recording statements of labour lnspector Tariqul Islam.

Earlier, Dhaka Labour Court fixed June 6 to start testimony but Dr Yunus filed petitions challenging the procedure. Both the High Court and Appellate Division of the Supreme Court rejected such petitions clearing way for trial.

 

The three other accused are Managing Director of Grameen Telecom Md Ashraful Hasan, director Nurzahan Begum and director Md Shahjahan.

Arifuzzaman, labour inspector of the Department of Factories and Institutions, filed the case against four people including Dr Yunus with Dhaka Labour Court-3 on September 9, 2021.

The accused persons are facing charges of not submitting profit of Sramik Kalyan Foundation, regularising  job and doing irregularities over holidays.

During deposition, Dr Yunus’ lawyer Abdullah Al Mamun threatened to boycott the court.

He accused opposite side counsel of making leading questions.

However, the judge intervened in and brought the situation under control.

 

It may be mention that during hearing of writ in the apex court, Dr Yunus’ counsel tried to say that client is an international figure and powerful.
