Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan on Wednesday sought cancellation of bail of Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus in a case filed over labour law violation.

The state lawyer came up with the plea during hearing in the case at Dhaka Third Labour Court.

Khurshid made the verbal petition before the court after defence lawyer Abdullah Al Mamun submitted a petition seeking legal action against seven officials of DIFE on charges of tampering documents in the case.

Khurshid also urged the court to cancel its earlier order that allowed exemption of personal appearance of Professor Yunus in the case.

He told the court that Professor Muhammad Yunus went abroad without taking permission from the court and he was abusing the conditions of bail.

The charge of forgery was brought by the defence following the instructions of Professor Yunus and he was playing behind it from abroad, said Khurshid.

‘Professor Yunus is abusing the conditions of bail and exemption of personal appearance during the court hearing. So we want the judge’s order in this regard.’

Later, Khurshid sought some time to submit a written a petition seeking cancellation of Professor Yunus’ bail and the court chairman Sheikh Merina Sultana allowed the time.

The court started hearing at about 12:20pm in the case filed against four people, including Grameen Telecom chairman professor Muhammad Yunus on charges of labour law violation.

On September 7, the defence started cross-examining prosecution witness Tariqul Islam, also a labour inspector in the case but could not complete the cross-examination.

On June 6, the court framed charges against the accused — including Prof Yunus — in the case.

The three others accused in the case are Grameen Telecom’s top officials Ashraful Hasan, Nur Jahan Begum and Mohammad Shahjahan.

On September 9, 2021, labour inspector (general) SM Arifuzzaman of DIFE filed the case with the Third Labour Court of Dhaka for labour law violation at Grameen Telecom.
