The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday jailed the mayor of Dinajpur municipality Syed Jahangir Alam for one month and fined him Tk 1 lakh for the contempt of the court by making derogatory remarks against a fellow judge of the Appellate Division.
A five-member bench, led by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan, also asked the mayor, also a local leader of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, to surrender in the Dinajpur Chief Judicial Magistrate Court within seven days or asked the police to arrest him in default.
Four pro-Awami League Supreme Court lawyers in August filed a contempt of court petition against the BNP leader for making derogatory comments in a YouTube channel against Appellate Division M Enayetur Rahim centering the verdict against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
The four lawyers are — Harun-or-Rashid, Mahfuzur Rahman Rahman, Md Moniruzzaman Rana and Shafique Raihan Shaon.
