A metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on Monday ordered further investigation into a case under Official Secrets Act against Daily Prothom Alo journalist Rozina Islam.
The court order came months after clearing her of the charges by the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police as no substantial evidence was found against her.
Metropolitan magistrate Tofazzal Hossain passed the order and assigned the Police Bureau of Investigation to probe the case filed by a govt official on charge of collecting ‘official documents. ‘
Sub-inspector Nizam Uddin Fakir who is deployed in the CMM Court in Dhaka also said that the court did not set any date for submitting the PBI report.
In late October 2022, the Detective Branch submitted its investigation report to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court dropping charges against her in a case filed under the Official Secrets Act in May 2021.
On May 17, 2021, journalist Rozina Islam was confined to the health ministry for six hours and she was tortured there when she was gathering information on corruption in the health sector.
She was arrested and later a case was filed against her with the Shahbagh police station.
She was released on bail on May 23 after surrendering her passport to a court.
