Countdown begins to hold elections to Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) to be held tomorrow amid much competition among candidates and enthusiasm among voters.
Ruling Awami League pick Azmat Ullah and independent Zaida Khatun are vying for mayoral post.
Zaida Khatun is mother of Gazipur City former mayor Jahangir Alam whose candidacy was scrapped for bankruptcy.
Poll symbol of Azmat Ullah is party’s stereotype “boat” while that of Zahida “table clock.”
Vote cast will be held at 480 centres of which 351 are termed important.
The Election Commission is sending poll materials to the centres today.
The government has announced a general holiday in Gazipur on Thursday following the voting.
Earlier, on April 3, the Election Commission announced the schedule for Gazipur, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Khulna and Barisal City Corporation elections.
Ruling party and opposition appear to be taking the city polls seriously to vindicate their popularity ahead of the parliamentary elections.
