Law enforcers arrested 10 suspects from different areas of the capital in connection with the killing of Juba League activist Oliullah Rubel in Dhaka’s Gulbagh area early Friday.
The arrestees are Habib Ahsan, Md Alif Hossain, Md Rabiul Sunny, Md Mehedi Hasan, Md Shahjal, Md Rafiqul Islam, Nur Alam, Md Sumon Mir, Adnan Asif and Md Shakil.
Of them, Rapid Action Battalion arrested Asif and Shakil while Detective Branch rounded up the rest.
Both RAB and DB police disclosed these at separate press briefings in the capital on Sunday, two days after the murder.
Lieutenant Colonel Arif Mohiuddin Ahmed, commander of the RAB-3, at a press briefing at the force’s media center in the capital’s Karwan Bazar, said that Rubel was killed following previous enmity with Shahjalal over establishing supremacy in Shantibagh area.
Recently, Rubel tried to start water supply business along with internet and egg businesses, he said, adding, enmity with Shahjalal over establishing supremacy led to Rubel’s death .
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s DB chief Md Harun-ur-Rashid at another press briefing at DMP media center said victim Rubel had a conflict with one Nibir and Shahjalal over establishing dominance in Shantibagh area.
Nibir and Shahjalal hired Habib to kill Rubel while Nibir gave Tk 4000 to Habib to buy machetes, he said.
As per the plan, Habib bought two machetes from Khilgaon Bazar, the DB officer said.
On the day of the killing, Habib Alif took position in front of the residence of Rubel on Malibagh Bazar road at Gulbagh and Mehedi and Sunny were on guard, Harun said.
Habib and Alif chased Rubel on his way home by a rickshaw and at one stage Alif chopped Rubel with a machete, the DB chief said, adding that Habib and Alif hacked him indiscriminately and left the scene immediately.
Victim’s wife Tajina Dewan filed a murder case with Shahjanpur police station in this connection, he added.
On Saturday, the DB chief said that they identified those involved in the killing of Rubel.
On Friday, Rubel was hacked dead at Gulbagh in Shahjahanpur in the capital.
Rubel was also former office secretary of Shahjahanpur Thana Chhatra League. He was involved with the local Jubo League without any official position.
