Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 12 gold bars, weighing 1.4 kilogram, from a passenger of a bus at Belpukur area of Puthiya upazila in Rajshahi and arrested three people in this connection on Wednesday.
The arrestees are identified as Md Alal 45, son of late Lalor Miha, hailing from Dhamrai of Savar, Shuvro Karmakar, 27, son of Badal Karmakar, hailing from Noyonchuka Kamarpara village and Milon Haldar, 28.
Rajshahi BGB-1 Battalion Commander Lt Col Ferdous Ziauddin Mahmud said a team of BGB conducted a raid at a Chapainawabganj-bound bus at 5:00pm and recovered the smuggled gold bars, worth Tk 82 lakh, from Alal’s shoes. Gleaning information from Alal, the law enforcers also arrested two of his associates.
Bangladesh Jewelers Association of Rajshahi Branch said the weight of the each gold bar is 24 carats. The gold will be deposited in the treasury branch of the deputy commissioner.
