The body of an independent councillor candidate was recovered in Jhenaidah’s Shailkupa upazila early hours of Thursday, five hours after the brother of his rival councillor candidate was hacked to death. Both the candidates are Awami League supporters.

The deceased was identified as Alamgir Hossain Babu, an independent candidate for ward 8 in the upcoming Shailkupa municipality election.

The body was recovered from Debtola point of the Kumar river in the area at around 1:00am.
Earlier, Boltu Hossain, 50, younger brother of party candidate Shawkat Hossain, was hacked dead Wednesday evening.

Jahangir Alam, officer-in-charge of Shailkupa Police Station, said a group of supporters of another councillor candidate Alamgir Hossain swooped on Boltu when he was in the election campaign office in Kabirpur area around 7:00pm.

The attackers assaulted Boltu with lethal weapons, leaving him critically injured, he added.

The injured man was taken to Kushtia Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 9:30pm, said Taposh Kumar Sarker, resident medical officer of the hospital.
