Living on a remote island with sprawling green hills and a handful of inhabitants sounds pretty tempting right now – and one island that fits the bill is after two new residents.
In fact, you’ll even be paid for the opportunity, with both your food and accommodation covered throughout your stay.
That’s because two residents on Great Blasket Island, an island off the coast of Ireland’s County Kerry, are looking for a pair of friends, or a couple, to come and become the new caretakers on the island, helping to manage the local cafe and some of the holiday cottages.
You’d be on the island from April through to October, so there will be ample opportunities to explore the breathtaking spot which boasts ancient ruins, sprawling green landscapes, and even some golden sandy beaches.
Oh, and there’s an impressive array of wildlife too including a colony of grey seals that can be seen relaxing on the beaches on sunny days.
As for the job itself? Billy O’Connor and his partner Alice Hayes, who own three cottages and a coffee shop on the island, are looking for someone to manage the shop and three of the cottages.
That includes meeting and greeting guests, serving tea and coffee, and ‘ensuring the day to day’ needs are met.
Your food and accommodation will be included as part of the role, on top of the wage (to be agreed between Billy and Alice and the successful applicant).
Your home will be the main bedroom above the coffee shop – so if you’re applying with a friend, take note you’ll be sharing a room during your stay.
Daily food shops will be delivered, and your laundry can be collected and washed on the mainland.
Now it’s not exactly a luxurious countryside retreat – you’ll be working after all, not to mention that the island’s remote nature means it doesn’t have electricity.
However, that hasn’t stopped this from being a hugely popular opportunity.
Last year when Billy and Alice put out a job application form for the caretaker role, they had over 40,000 applicants.
As a result, this year they’ve been forced to put a cap on the number of applications they can receive – so if you think you’d be perfect for the job, you’ll want to send in your form as soon as possible.
