A 25-year-old football player died in Ranishankail upazila of Thakurgaon on Tuesday night, following a snakebite.

The deceased was identified as Rubel, son of Rashid Ali of Bhoronia Mondolpara village in Dharmagarh union of the upazila.

According to family sources, Rubel went to bed at night but a poisonous snake lying there bit him on his neck.

He was taken to Thakurgaon Adhunik Sadar Hospital, where doctors administered an antivenom. Rubel was then referred to a hospital in Dinajpur for better treatment but he died on the way.

Locals alleged that the number of deaths due to snake bites is increasing as there is an acute shortage of vaccine in the Upazila Health Complex.

Upazila health officer Dr Abdus Samad Chowdhury, however, rued the absence of a medical specialist at the facility.
