Jamalpur’s Dewanganj Municipality Mayor Shah Newaz Shahanshah has been suspended following slapping an upazila secondary education officer during a Victory Day programme on December 16.

A notification, signed by Farzana Mannan, deputy secretary of Local Government Division, was issued in this regard on Tuesday.

Earlier, local Awami League expelled him for engaging in unlawful activities that breached the party’s discipline on Monday. The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of Jamalpur district unit of AL on the night

On Thursday, Mayor Shahanshah slapped and assaulted Upazila Secondary Education Officer Meher Ullah at a Victory Day event for announcing his name at number five.

The mayor hurled abuses at the officer, presenter of the event held on the Dewanganj Government High School premises, before assaulting him.
