‘Rohingya robber’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) near Baraitali area of Teknaf upazila in Coz’s Bazar on Thursday morning.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Karim, 38, son of Abdur Salam, hailing from Bloc-C at Leda Rohingya Camp no 24 in Nhilla union of the upazila.

Lt Mirza Shaheed Mahtab, Company Commander of RAB-15 in Teknaf, said acting on a tip-off, a gang of robbers gathered in the area for taking preparation to commit robbery, a team of RAB conducted a drive in the area this morning.

Sensing presence of the elite force, the robbers opened fire on them, forcing RAB members to fire back in self-defence, triggring the gunfight, he said.

After the gunfight, the law enforcers recoverd the bullet-hit body of Abdul and taken to Upazila Health Complex where duty doctor declared him dead, he added.

Homemade arms, three rounds of bullets and 10,000 pieces of yaba were recovered from the spot, Mirza Shaheed Mahtab said.
