Bangladesh women’s football team made history on Tuesday as they sealed their maiden win over India during their group-deciding game of the SAFF Women’s Championship at the Dasharath Rangasala Stadium in Kathmandu.
Sirat Jahan Swapna scored a brace while Krishna Rani Sarkar netted once to help Bangladesh clinch a 3-0 victory over five-time SAFF champions India in the two sides’ final group-stage game.
Bangladesh, ranked 89 places behind India in the FIFA rankings, completely outplayed their opposition throughout the game.
The previous best result for Bangladesh against India was when the two sides played out a goalless draw in the 2016 SAFF Championship in India.
Both Bangladesh and India had already confirmed their semi-final berths but the commanding victory on Tuesday ensured the girls in red and green finished top of Group A.
Bangladesh will play Bhutan in the semi-final on September 16 at the same venue.
