The ruling Awami League (AL) has formed two steering committees to supervise the overall election activities ahead of the two city polls to be held in Dhaka on 30 January.
AL advisory council member Amir Hossain Amu will lead the steering committee of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) while Toafil Ahmed will lead the steering committee of Dhaka North Coty Corporation (DNCC).
The decision came at a meeting of Awami League maiden joint meeting between newly formed Awami League Central Working Committee and its Advisory Council with Awami League president Sheikh Hasina in the chair on Friday.
Besides, AL presidium members Abdur Razzaque, Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim are also in the steering committee for the DSCC election.
AL presidium member Faruk Khan, joint general secretaries Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif and Dipu Moni, organising secretary Mirza Azam and cultural secretary Ashim Kumar Ukil are also in the steering committee for the DNCC election. Dhaka South city AL chapter general secretary Humayun Kabir and north AL general secretary SM Mannan Kochi will discharge their duties as member secretary of those two committees.
Presidents of the two chapters will be inducted as the members of the steering committee.
Earlier, the party observed one minute silence showing respect to AL former general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam’s 1st death anniversary on January 3.
Earlier, the Awami League nominated Atiqul Islam and Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh to contest the elections to DNCC and DSCC respectively.
