At least 80 “American terrorists” were killed in Iranian missile strikes on US troops in Iraq, Iranian state television claimed on Wednesday.
The US has not released information on casualties, if any.
Iranian state media also claimed US military equipment — including choppers — was badly damaged, Reuters reported.
Iran’s missile attacks on US-led forces in Iraq were retaliation for a US drone strike that killed the powerful Iranian military commander Maj Gen Qassem Soleimani, and have led to a deepening of the crisis in the Middle East.
Iran seems to have kept its word after promising a response to Soleimani’s killing, and has now vowed a “crushing reponse” in the event of retaliation by the US.
As well, Iran’s army renewed a demand for US troops to be withdrawn from the Middle East, state TV reported.
Senior US opposition politicians, including the Speaker of the lower chamber of the legislature, have urged restraint.
US President Donald Trump has said he will make a statement in a few hours.
