The provost of Bishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore Hall of Jahangirnagar University, Professor Nazmul Hasan Talukder, resigned over Bangladesh Chhatra League activists allegedly attacking students protesting on the campus in the early hours of Monday.

The protesters alleged that they were attacked by leaders and activists of Chhatra League when they were chanting slogans while passing through the road adjacent to the hall.

Students of the university Ahsan Labib, Sohagi Samia, Tauhid Siam and Mehrab Sifat were injured in the attack.

Among them, Ahsan Labib was sent to the university medical centre while Sohagi Samia received primary treatment at Enam Medical College Hospital.

Besides, leaders and activists of Chhatra League unit of Bishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore Hall checked the mobile phones of a few students in the presence of the hall provost and prevented them from joining the protest procession which started at 11:30pm on Sunday night.

After the incident, pro-vice-chancellor, academic, Mustafa Feeroz and some teachers on behalf of the administration came to visit the spot.

The vice-chancellor, Nurul Alam, said that he would investigate the matter and take appropriate action.

Thousands of university students across Bangladesh took to the streets on Sunday night, primarily on their campuses, in protest at remarks made by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The protesters said the prime minister’s remarks deeply offended them.

The protests were sparked by comments made by Prime Minister Hasina during a press conference at her official residence, Ganabhaban, where she responded to questions regarding the anti-quota protests on Sunday.

She questioned, ‘Why is there so much anger against the liberation war and freedom fighters? Will the grandchildren of freedom fighters not receive quotas? Will Razakars’ grandchildren get them? My question is to the people of the country.’
