Traffic movement in Dhaka and elsewhere in Bangladesh became standstill since Tuesday morning as students demanding quota reform blocked different important points in the capital and highways in different parts of the country.
The student protesters are also protesting at Monday’s attack on quota protesters in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country by ruling Awami League’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League.
They also blocked a train on the Dhaka-Chattogram line.
The passengers and other road users suffered immensely on the roads.
Since morning, the students blocked different points in the capital.
They blocked different points in Merul Badda, Uttara, Azampur, Bashundhara, Jatrabari, Dhonia, Banani, Mohakhali, Rampura, Sabujbagh, Mirpur 10, Dhanmondi 27, Manik Mia Avenue, and Science Lab since morning.
BRAC University students blocked one side of the road at about 10:30am.
Meanwhile, North South Univrtsity students are protesting by blocking the road in front of the campus in Bashundhara residential area.
Badda to Kuril Highway road is closed due to students’ blockade.
Students of different educational institutes also blocked roads at other points in the city.
Vehicles were seen stranded on different roads across the city including on the Dhaka Elevated Expressway.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional Commissioner (traffic) Md Munibur Rahman confirmed that the students blocked the aforementioned areas.
‘Yes, there is a huge traffic gridlock on the roads while we are trying to keep the vehicles running on the roads,’ he said.
He also said that the students blocked the Dhala-Mymensingh and Dhaka-Aricha highways at some points.
Students also blocked rail line at Mohakhali area inside the capital at about 2:00pm.
Rail communications between Dhaka and the rest of the country currently remained halted, said Kamalapur railway thana officer-in-charge Ferdous Ahmed Biswas.
Correspondents from different districts said that the students blocked the Ashulia-Dhour, Dhaka-Rangpur, Khulna-Jashote, Mymensingh -Tangail and Rajshahi-Rangpur highways.
The students also blocked the Cox’s Baxar express train on Dhaka-Chattogram route.
