Ekushey Padak-winning linguist Mahbubul Haque dies

Ekushey Padak-winning linguist-researcher professor Mahbubul Haque died on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka at midnight past Wednesday. He was 76.

Mahbubul Haque was suffering from heart and kidney diseases.

 

Bangla Academy official poet Pias Majid said that Mahbubul Haque is survived by a son and a daughter.

‘His namaz-e-janaza was held after zuhr prayers at his daughter’s home in the Bashundhara residential area in Dhaka on Thursday. He will be laid to rest in his family graveyard in Chattogram,’ said Pias Majid, who added that cultural affairs ministry, Bangla Academy and others paid tribute to Mahbubul Haque on Thursday.

He completed his honours in Bangla language and literature in 1969 and his master’s in the same subject in 1970 from Chattogram University. He obtained his PhD from the same university in 1997.

Later, he taught at Bangla department at Chattogram University.

Mahbubul Haque’s notable works include Bangla Bananer Niyom, Rabindra Sahitya Rabindra Bhabhna, Itihas o Sahitya and others.

Mahbubul Haque, born on November 3, 1948, received Ekushey Padak in 2019 and Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2018 for his contribution to essay.
