Thirty-one cultural organisations on Wednesday paid tribute to student protesters of the quota reform movement who achieved historical one-point demand.
They also demanded justice for those killed in the movement in Bangladesh.
Organised by Protibadi Shamajik Shangskritik Shangathansamuho, the event titled Harmony Rally also condemned attacks on Hindu houses, temples and cultural organisation offices at Shahbagh.
The event was comprised of discussion, songs, poem recitation and a declaration which started at 4.30pm.
Beginning with the ‘Muktira Mandiro Shopano Tale’ chorus to pay tribute to those killed in the movement, the event rendered people’s songs and held recitation of poems.
Cultural troupe Bibartan Sangskritik Kendra, Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigosthi, Samageet, Teerondaj, Democrazy Clowns, among others, performed at the event.
‘Student and mass people jointly achieved the one-point demand and forced resignation from the government which was fascist. We want to take forward our dream of reforming this country for all people and never want any fascists to come back,’ said Bibartan Sangskritik Kendra general secretary Mafijur Rahman Laltu in his welcome speech.
The event was moderated by vice-president of Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigosthi Jamshed Anwar Topon.
Jamshed Anwar Topon said, ‘We demand justice for killings in this movement. We demand justice for every killing although Sheikh Hasina flees away.’
‘Communal political parties are trying to capture power. We have to be aware of them, because we don’t want to see another fascist into the government. We have to stop attacks by extremist forces against the religious minority, cultural organisations and communities,’ said Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigosthi general secretary Amit Ranjan Dey, who also read the declaration of the platform which demanded ensuring democracy, a corruption-free interim government and banning corrupt persons from participating in upcoming national election.
Besides, a protest against vandalism against the sculptures, art organisations and artists arranged by artist friends of Rahul Ananda was also held in front of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Wednesday.
Popular singer and cultural activist Rahul Ananda was attacked on August 5. The attacker burned his home and studio while more than 3000 musical instruments were destroyed.
