The former Setabganj municipality mayor was killed in an alleged gunfight between two groups of drug peddlers in Bochaganj upazila of Dinajpur early Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Ayub Ali, 55, son of Abdur Rahman of Rail Colonypara area of Setabganj municipality.
ATM Golam Rasul, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch (DB) of Dinajpur police, confirmed this to media this morning.
He said Ayub Ali was shot in Hatrampur Shalbagan area of Bochaganj upazila at 2:00 am on Tuesday night when two rival groups of drug peddlers locked into a gunfight in the area.
Police claimed that the deceased was a criminal and drug paddler and was accused in 19 cases, including drug dealing, trafficking and snatching.
“A team of district DB police conducted a drive in Hatrampur Shalbagan area on early Tuesday. The team heard the sound of gunfire between two groups of drug dealers and opened blank fire to disperse them,” Golam Rasul said.
He also said, “Later, law enforces recovered the bullet-hit body of Ayub Ali and rushed him to M Abdur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.”
Police recovered a one-shooter gun, 2 rounds of bullets, local weapons, 2 contrails and 200 pieces of Yaba pills from the spot, the OC added.
