Today marks two years since legendary actor, writer, playwright Soumitra Chattopadhyay passed away. He is one of the most influential actors in Indian cinema. Soumitra Chatterjee has acted for more than six decades. Soumitra died on November 15, 2020 while undergoing treatment in the hospital.
Soumitra Chatterjee’s first work was Satyajit’s Apur Sansar in 1959. Tin Kanya (1961), Abhiyan (1962), Charulata (1964), Aranya Day Naatri (1969), Ashni Sanket (1973), Sonar Kella (1974), Jai Baba Fallunath (1978), Heerak Rajar Desha (1980), Out of the House (1984), Ganashatru (1989), Aakash Kusum (1965), Khudhit Pashan (1960), Jhinder Bandi (1961), Swarlipi (1961), Saat Pake Bandha (1963), Parineeta (1969), Samsar Shimande (1975) and Soumitra acted in films like Ganadevtar (1978).
Apart from movies, he has acted in many dramas, yatras and TV serials. Apart from acting, he wrote plays and poetry. Directed the play. His stage play group is called ‘Sanstava’. He was also the editor of ‘Ekshan’ literary magazine. In 2015, he performed ‘Gangachari’ for his team at the Ganga Jamuna Theater and Cultural Festival in Bangladesh. He received Padma Bhushan in 2004 and Dadasaheb Phal in 2012. He was awarded the Legion of Honor by the French government in 2017.
