The pre-scheduled Cumilla-Chattogram road march of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party to press home their one-point demand began from Kalakachua under Burichang upazilain Cumilla Thursday morning.
The 155-kilometre road march began at about 11:00am after a rally at the ground of Khandker Food Gallary in Kalakachua area where the party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir addressed as the chief guest.
The party organised six road marches in different parts of the country between September 19 and October 3 to press home their demand for resignation of the government, dissolving the parliament and holding the upcoming general election under a non-party and neutral government.
Though the inaugural rally began at about 10:00am, .the party leaders and activists in hundreds gathered at the place defying heavy rain.
Presided over by Cumilla South District BNP convener Haji Aminur Rashid Yasin, the inaugural rally was conducted by Cumilla city BNP convener Utbatul Bari Abu and South district BNP member secretary Haji Jasim.
Meanwhile, a large number of leaders and activists led by Khandaker Maruf Hossain, son of the party standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, joined the road march at Gauripur under Daudkandi in Cumilla.
Thousands of leaders and activists from different upazilas of Comilla district joined the road march with buses, trucks, microbuses and motorcycles.
As the road march began, enthusiastic crowd and party leaders and activists, standing on both sides of the road, welcomed the road march.
The road march met in the second rally at Swagazi under Comilla Sadar upazila, the party leaders said.
A large number of BNP leaders and activists led by the party chairperson’s advisory council member Monirul Haque Chowdhury staged a huge showdown.
Besides, a good number of BNP leaders and activists from Kalakachua joined the road march with microbuses, mini-trucks and motorcycles from Muradnagar.
The third roadside rally was held in Feni.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury are leading the road march.
Two more rallies at Mirsarai and Bhatiari under Sitakunda in Chattogram will be held on the way to Chattogram.
The concluding rally of the road march will be held at Kazir Deuri in Chattogram in the afternoon.
