BNP senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain wondered over the desire of Jagannath University VC Mijanur Rahman to take the charge of Jubo League, saying he wants to “do it to indulge in plundering”.

“I’ve seen in newspapers that Jagannath University VC Mijanur Rahman announced to quit his post if he is given the charge of Jubo League. I’ve got stunned seeing such news. Shame on him!” he said.

The BNP leader further said, “Why does he want to do it? It’s possible to run casinos and indulge in tender (manipulation), and there’s a scope to plunder thousands of crore taka after taking the charge of Jubo League. Just think about it… what has become the goal of a vice chancellor?”

Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, came up with the remarks while speaking at a discussion arranged by Khaleda Zia Mukti Parishad at the Jatiya Press Club, demanding BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s release from jail.

According to media reports, Mijanur Rahman on Friday said he is willing to resign from the post of Jagannath University’s VC if he is given the charge of Jubo League to bring the ruling party youth wing back on the right track.

Mosharraf, also a former teacher of Dhaka University, said it is unfortunate that a university VC wants to be the head of a political parity’s associate body. “The VC wants to be the chief of a party’s associate body which has earned bad name for corruption and extortion, tender manipulation. What can be the more glaring example than it about the social degradation?”

He also said Jahangir Nagar University VC reportedly gave Chhatra League Tk 1.80 core as eid gift. “Does she (JU VC) have a ‘money tree’ or a ‘money-making machine’?”

The BNP leader said the country’s every sector started rotting as the country is run by a government which is not ‘elected’ by people.

He also said the government has no accountability to people as it has annihilated democracy to prolong its power.

Mosharraf said evil activities like extortion, corruption, repression and casino business cannot be stopped unless a pro-people government is established and democracy is restored. “Democracy won’t be restored if Khaleda Zia is not freed. So, we must take to the streets to free our leader (Khaleda).”

Stating that Buet student Abrar Fahad was killed for opposing the anti-sate deals with India, he warned those who supported his killers from behind must face trial someday.
