Thousands of people living on the shoal of rivers and char areas in Lalmonirhat and Kurigram were marooned in floodwater due to the rise of water level of Brahmaputra and Teesta rivers following heavy downpour and onrush of water from upstream hilly areas.

The flood, which hit for the fourth time this year, has destroyed Aman paddy and vegetable fields in these areas.

The Dharla River is flowing 22 cm above the danger mark in Lalmonirhat and 34 cm above in Kurigram since 6:00am today, according to officials of Lalmonirhat and Kurigram Water Development Board.

In Lalmonirhat, 57 houses were devoured by rivers with locals trying to protect their belongings by dumping sand-filled sacks and tree trunks.

Low-lying areas in more than a dozen shoals such as Gokunda, Rajpur, Kalmati, Folimari, Sinduna and Goddimari have been inundated.

About 25,000 shoal inhabitants have been stranded because of the swelling rivers while another 1,00,000 are at risk of being impacted by the overflowing Teesta.
