A Tangail court on Thursday sentenced five people to death for gang-raping a female student of a madrasa in Bhuapur upazila of Tangail.
Judge Khaleda Yasmin of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal passed the order this noon.
The court also fined them with Tk1 lakh each.
Of the five accused, Sanjit and Gopi Chandra Shil were present in the court and others are on the run after taking bail.
According to the case statement, the convicts gang-raped the madrasa girl after abducting her in January of 2012.
It was the first verdict after President Mohammad Abdul Hamid promulgated an ordinance allowing death penalty as the highest punishment for rape instead of life term imprisonment.
