Throwing Rajshahi Polytechnic principal into pond: Students skip class, stage protest

Boycotting classes and examinations, teachers and students of Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute are staging demonstration programme on Rajshahi-Naogaon highway on Sunday morning to press home their six-point demand including punishment of those who threw the institute’s principal into a pond on the campus on Saturday afternoon.

Their six-point demands include cancellation of the studentship of the accused Bangladesh Chhatra League men responsible for the incident, establishment of student politics-free campus, restriction on outsiders to enter the campus, ensure safety of all students, teachers and officials of the institute and ensure congenial atmosphere on the campus.

The agitated student formed a human chain at around 10:00am.

Meanwhile, police have arrested 25 people so far in this connection.

Earlier on Saturday afternoon, a group of ‘Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists’ threw Farid Uddin Ahmed into the pond on the campus for his refusal to allow two students to fill up forms for examination for inadequate class attendance. The incident was captured in a surveillance camera.

Later, the principal filed a case with Chandrima Police Station around 9pm on Saturda against 50 people.

The accused include joint general secretary of the institute unit of BCL Kamal Hossain Sourav, Murad, Shanta, Bony, Hasibul Hossain Shanta, Salman Tony, Habibul and Maruf.
