A bill titled “Kurigram Agricultural University Bill-2021” was passed in the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) on Wednesday (today) with a vision to enrich the agriculture of the country’s northern parts through education and research.
Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni moved the bill in the House which was unanimously passed by voice votes with JS Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.
While placing the bill, Dr Dipu Moni said the agricultural university which will be the first in the district will help to improve the overall agricultural education of the country.
BNP lawmakers Harunur Rashid, Barrister Rumeen Farhana, Independent lawmaker Rezaul Karim Bablu, Jatiya party lawmakers Mujibul Huq, Ponir Uddin Ahmed and Pir Fazlur Rahman elaborately discussed on the bill.
Earlier on March 9, a virtual cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina approved the Kurigram Agricultural University Draft Law, 2021.
According to the draft, the university will take necessary steps for teaching, research and training at various undergraduate and postgraduate levels in agricultural sciences. In addition to educational activities, it will exhibit sustainable agricultural technology and high yielding agricultural products.
The bill stipulates that the Chancellor of the University will appoint an agronomist or an eminent professor, involved in agricultural education and research, as the Vice-Chancellor (VC) for a term of four years as directed by the President.
Moreover, no one can be appointed as VC for more than two terms.
