Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni on Friday said most of the demands of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) students will be met soon.

She came up with the remarks while talking to journalists after a meeting with the representatives of the SUST students who had gone a movement to press for their several demands.

The meeting with the 11-member delegation was held at Sylhet Circuit House where Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury was also present.

Dipu Moni said, “We tried to understand the demands and issues placed by the students. Several of the proposals have already been accepted. We hope that we can fulfil the rest soon.”

She said, “One of the demands of students is the removal of the vice-chancellor. We discussed that issue too. We listened attentively to their statements and why they want that. We’ll inform the chancellor (President) of the matter and he’ll take the decision.”

The students’ demands include resignation of the SUST VC and resumption of classes and examinations, withdrawal of cases filed against the students, one-time financial assistance for seriously injured Sajal Kundu, raising the budget allocation for university research, changing the examination system and appointment of teachers based on PhD degree and demo classes.

They also demanded making former SUST teachers — Muhammed Zafar Iqbal and his wife Yasmin Haque — emeritus professors.
