The High Court on Sunday asked the government to inform it about what action was taken against Teknaf upazila nirbahi officer Mohammad Kaiser Khasro for hurling abusive language at a journalist on mobile phone conservation.

The UNO called Dhaka Post’s Cox’s Bazar correspondent Saidul Farhad for running a report on the online news portal on July 21 titled ‘Gifted house constructed in low-lying land now floats in water’.

A bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat issued the directive verbally after Supreme Court lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan drew the court attention to various newspapers’ report about the UNO’s action which was posted on the social media.

The court asked Prothom Alo and Dhaka Post to authenticate their reports about the UNO’s action by August 1.

The court also asked deputy attorney general AKM Amin Uddin Manik to inform the court about the action taken against the UNO.

The court observed that the UNO had no right to take law in his own hand as there was the Bangladesh Press Council which was empowered to look into the allegation of misconduct or violation of ethics by a journalist.

The court described the UNO as ‘hooligan’ and called him a ‘wrong-headed person’.

UNO Kaiser apologised to the journalist at a press conference which was arranged by the deputy commissioner of Cox’s Bazar on July 22.
