Theatre troupe Theatre Art Unit staged the 6th show of its play titled Madhab Malanchi at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Tuesday.
The play, based on a story from the collection of Momenshahi Gitika, has been written by Bibhash Chakraborty and directed by Rokeya Rafique Baby.
The play revolves around the love story of Durlabh Raja’s son Madhab and Balaraja’s daughter Malanchi.
Madhab Malanchi begins with Sutradhar, played by Nuruzzaman Babu, narrating the story of Durlabh Raja’s youngest son Madhab. Durlabh Raja, father of five sons, gives the responsibility of raising Madhab to his eldest son’s wife Chandraban after the death of the queen.
Conflict begins among the brothers over the succession of the throne and they plan to kill Madhab. Chandraban sends Madhab to another country to protect him.
Madhab grows up into a fine responsible young man under the shelter of Balaraja. His daughter Malanchi is about to marry, but subsequently Malanchi and Madhab fall in love. Malanchi gives Madhab a condition that if he can stay with Manpabaner Nao under the Gurguri tree in the night, she will leave her father’s kingdom.
Madhab accepts the condition but his luck does not favour him and Malanchi loses him. Malanchi in disguise of a male soldier starts searching for Madhab. She found Madhab after a fearless journey.
Rakibul Islam Manik, Sajal Chowdhury, Ismail Siraji, Rana Sikdar, Kazi Tanvir, Mahmuda Bhabna, Sujan Rezaul, Dolon Aziz, Hasnat Pradip, Nahid Sultana Lemon and others played different characters in the play.
Theatre Art Unit premiered the play Madhab Malanchi at the Experimental Theatre Hall of BSA on June 21, 2022.
