Activists of the ruling Awami League and its associate organisations are on the streets in Dhaka on Wednesday while the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its allies are scheduled to organise protest rallies across the country to mark ‘Democracy Killing Day’.

Marking Mass Upsurge Day, which was on Tuesday, Dhaka South unit of the AL organised a rally in front of its Bangabandhu Avenue central office on Wednesday.

Beside, AL Dhaka North unit is scheduled to organise another programme at Banani Chairman Bari area at 3:00pm to distribute warm cloth among the economically marginaliaed people.

AL general secretary is scheduled to address both the rallies as the chief guest.

The ruling Awami League responded with counter programmes to the previous political activities announced by the BNP and its allies – a Dhaka divisional mass rally on December 10, a countrywide protest on December 30, sit-in protests on January 11 and 15, 2023.

AL top leaders reiterated that their activities were not to counter BNP activities rather to keep the public safe.

The BNP and its allies are holding rallies on Wednesday on the occasion of  ‘Democracy Killing Day’, to press home 10-point demands, including holding the next general elections under a caretaker government.

On January 25 in 1975, the then Awami League government introduced the one-party BAKSAL rule in the country abolishing all the opposition parties and the opposition parties are marking the day as ‘Democracy Killing Day’.

This is their fourth simultaneous movement programme.
