Seventy three new titles arrived at the Amar Ekushey Book Fair on Sunday, raising the total number of new books to over 300 so far on the fifth day of the month-long fair.
Collections of poems, novels, essays, stories, children’s books, biographies are dominating the tally of new arrivals so far.
According to Bangla Academy, 303 new titles arrived till Sunday.
Of them, 61 collections of poems, 55 novels, 23 books of essays, 18 books of stories, 16 children’s books, 14 biographies and 116 books of other genres arrived.
Book sellers said that their publishing houses would bring more new titles gradually during the fair.
Abosar Prokashan Sangstha stall manager Masud Rana said, ‘It is only the fifth day of the month-long fair. We are working to bring 50 new titles during the fair.’
He added that Abosar brought 20 new books of different genres, namely translation, classic, essay, thriller and others so far.
Masud said that people mostly bought classic books from Abosar.
Charulipi Prokashon manager Masud Parvez said, ‘We are mainly bringing translation books, collection of poems and essay books.’
Parvez mentioned that 10 new titles had already arrived and 10 more new titles would arrive at Charulipi during the fair.
Publishing house Anyadhara is working to bring 10 more new titles and the house has already brought 14 new titles, said Anyadhara stall attendant Sagar.
He also mentioned that novels were dominating the tally of Anyadhara’s new arrivals and the top selling books.
A visitor Nikita Nowreen who was exploring the books of Anyadhara, said, ‘I have already brought Humayun Ahmed’s Himu Samagra and come to this stall to buy a new novel of Sadat Hossain.’
Dhaka College student Kajal Das said that he came in the fair to explore new books and collect catalogue to make his buying list.
On Sunday, a discussion session titled ‘Tribute: Samarjit Roy Chowdhury’ was held on the main stage of the fair on the Bangla Academy premises.
The fair will open its doors to visitors at 3:00pm on Monday.
