Bangladesh government has decided to import sugar from Malaysia at comparatively low cost.
The sugar will be sold at open market through TCB at low price.
Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) okayed two proposals of Commerce Ministry on Wednesday.
Additional Secretary of the Cabinet Division Syed Mahmud Khan confirmed the decision to journalists after a meeting.
A total of 12,500 ton sugar will be bought from BRIZO MARINE SDN BHD of Malaysia at Tk 68,67,43,125. At arrival at the port of Bangladesh, per kilogram sugar will cost Tk 89.50.
Another shipment of same amount of sugar will also arrive. As per the proposal, the per kg sugar price will cost Tk 88.74.
This sugar is being sold at subsidized prices at Tk 60.
The government is counting huge subsidy for low income people.
Sugar is one of products to have seen price spiral in last two years.
Loose sugar price at country’s market is Tk 104 per kg and packet sugar TK 109.
