Ex-DIG Mizan gets 14-year imprisonment in corruption case

A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced former deputy inspector general of police Mizanur Rahman Mizan to 14 years imprisonment in a corruption case.

The court also sentenced Mizan’s wife Sohelia Anar alias Ratna Rahman, younger brother Mahbubur Rahman and nephew Mahmudul Hasan to seven-year imprisonment each in the same case.

 

Dhaka Special Judge Court-6 judge Manjurul Imam announced the verdict.

Of the convicts, Mizan was in jail and his brother and nephew were on bail while his wife Sohelia Anar was absconding.

An arrest warrant has been issued against Mizan’s wife Sohelia Anar.

Anti-Corruption Commission director Manjur Morshed filed the case on June 24, 2019, against the four for amassing illegal wealth of Tk 3.28 core, concealing information about wealth of Tk 3.07 crore.

The ACC filed charge-sheet against them on January 30, 2020, and the court on October 20, 2020, framed charges against them.

Twenty-seven witnesses out of total 33 testified in the case.
