A question rattles in my mind as to whether BNP’s convicted acting chairman Tarique Rahman and his party have any impunity. Reason behind the question is that some political leaders get scot-free after committing heinous crimes in broad daylight.
Being a student of law department, I learnt in the first day of my class that ‘nobody is above law’, ‘law is blind’ etc.
I can remember famous quotation of Lord Denning, one of the best ever judges, “Be ye ever so high, the law is higher than ye.” In 1733, Dr Thomas Fuller, a physician, first made such statement “Be ye never so high, the law is above thee.” In 1977, Lord Denning cited the quotation in a case against Attorney General.
Now-a-days, statements and attitudes of some BNP-Jamaat leaders create an impression in public mind that they are above law.
In a recent zoom meeting, Tarique Rahman, sentenced to life imprisonment in August 21 grenade attack case for killing numerous people, made derogatory comments on the courts and questioned judicial system of the country.
