Saikat to become first Bangladeshi umpire at WC

Sharfuddoula Ibne Shaid Saikat is set to become the first Bangladeshi umpire to officiate in a Men’s One-Day International World Cup as he was appointed by the International Cricket Council for the forthcoming global event on Friday.

Saikat is part of the 16-member umpiring team appointed by the ICC to officiate matches at the World Cup 2023 in India, starting on October 5.

 

The 46-year-old has significant international experience as he has worked as an on-field umpire in nine Tests, 52 one-day internationals, and 43 Twenty20 internationals in men’s cricket, alongside 13 ODIs and 28 T20Is in women’s cricket.

He was part of the officiating panel at the 2012 and 2016 Asia Cup. Saikat also umpired matches in the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2018, and then in the 2019 and 2022 editions of the Women’s ODI World Cup.

The other 15 umpires selected for the upcoming World Cup are — Chris Brown, Kumar Dharmasena, Marais Erasmus, Chris Gaffaney, Michael Gough, Adrian Holdstock, Richard Illingworth, Richard Kettleborough, Nitin Menon, Ahsan Raza, Paul Reiffel, Rod Tucker, Alex Wharf, Joel Wilson, and Paul Wilson.

The four match referees for the tournament are – Jeff Crowe, Andy Pycroft, Richie Richardson, and Javagal Srinath.
