Amar Ekushey Book Fair begins 1 February

The Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2024 will begin on the Bangla Academy premises and at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on 1 February.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to inaugurate the month-long fair as the chief guest at 3pm.

Ministry of Cultural Affairs Secretary Khalil Ahmed will be present as the special guest while Bangla Academy President Selina Hossain will preside over the event and Director General Mohammad Nurul Huda will deliver the welcome speech.

Bangla Academy disclosed the details of the fair at a press conference held at Abdul Karim Sahitya Bisharad Auditorium of the academy on Tuesday.

This year, the theme of the fair is “Poro Boi Goro Desh, Bangabandhur Bangladesh” (Read books and build the country, Bangabandhu’s Bangladesh).

In the fair, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will unveil several new books including “Collected Works of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman: Volume-2” published by Bangla Academy. She will also hand over the Bangla Academy Literary Award 2023.

According to Bangla Academy, the book fair will be held in an area of about 11.5 lakh square feet. A total of 937 units have been allotted to 635 publishing houses and organisations.

Of those, 173 units have been allocated to 120 organisations on the Bangla Academy premises while 764 units have been allocated to 515 organisations at Suhrawardy Udyan.

Besides, there will be a total of 37 pavilions and 170 little magazine stalls. In addition, Bangla Academy will have three pavilions and one stall for the marketing of child-friendly publications.

There will be seminars and cultural programmes on the main stage of the book fair at 4pm every day.

Every Friday and Saturday, the fair will have “Shishu Prohor” from 11am to 1pm. As part of Amar Ekushey celebrations, children’s painting, recitation, and music competitions will be organised.

Besides, there will be strict security arrangements in and around the book fair venue to avert any untoward incident.

The fair will remain open from 3pm to 9pm from Sunday to Thursday, and from 11am to 9pm on Friday and Saturday. On 21 February, the book fair will begin at 8am and end at 9pm.
