A 45-year-old man was hacked to death allegedly by his rivals due to enmity between ruling Awami League’s factional feud regarding January 7 general election at village Uttar Chandpur under Kumarkhali upazila in Kushtia Wednesday night.

The deceased, Amirul Islam alias Nannu, is a resident of the Uttar Chandpur village in the upazila.

Kumarkhali police station officer-in-charge Aqibul Islam said that a group of miscreants stopped Nannu while he was going outside from his home at around 9:00pm.

The miscreants, at on stage, assaulted and hacked Nannu with sharp weapons and he died on the spot.

On information, a team of police recovered the body from the spot and sent it to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination, the police official said.

Locals said that there had been a long standing dispute between the supporters of Awami League nominated candidate Selim Altaf George and the supporters of the independent candidate and AL leader Abdur Rouf over the 12th Parliamentary Election.

Nannu was the supporter of Selim Altaf George. He might have been hacked to death by the rivals over the issue, they suspected.

The supporters of Selim Altaf George attacked and looted the houses of the supporters of independent candidate Abdur Rouf soon after spreading the news of Nannu’s death.

Additional police personnel were deployed in the area to avert any kind of untoward situation, the police official said.

Police were looking into matter and legal action would be taken against those found involved in the incident, the OC added.
