A Dhaka tribunal on Tuesday extended the bail period of Nobel Laureate Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus and three directors of Grameen Telecom until 23 May in a case involving violations of labour laws.

Chairman (in-charge) of the Labour Appellate Tribunal MA Awal issued the extension order, as confirmed by Abdullah-Al-Mamun, legal representative for Dr Yunus.

Yunus, chairman of Grameen Telecom and his colleagues appeared before the tribunal at 11:00am and filed a petition seeking extension of temporary bail until the appeal in the case is resolved.

The tribunal has scheduled 23 May for the hearing of the appeal filed by Yunus and the three Grameen Telecom directors against the sentence imposed by a labour court.

Earlier on 1 January, the Labour Court-3 of Dhaka had sentenced the four individuals to six months’ imprisonment each, along with a fine of Tk 30,000, for violating labour laws.
