The classes of all the government primary schools, Shishu Kalyan Trust schools and Bureau of Non-Formal Education learning centres across Bangladesh will remain closed till May 2 due to ongoing heatwave.

In a press release, the primary and mass education ministry on Monday announced the decision considering the health and protection of the children.

Meanwhile, in a separate press release, the education ministry said that all secondary level schools, colleges, madrassahs and technical educational institutions in 10 districts under Khulna division, nine districts under Rajshahi division, Dhaka, Tangail, Narayanganj, Munshiganj, Gazipur and Manikganj districts under Dhaka Division, Kurigram and Dinajpur districts under Rangpur division and Patuakhali district under Barishal division will remain closed only for Tuesday.

The decision was taken after consulting with the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the release also said.

Earlier, after a seven-day closure due to the heatwave, the educational institutions resumed in-person classes on Sunday by shortening the duration of classes and suspending all outdoor activities while many students across Bangladesh became sick and remained absent.

Two teachers reportedly died of ‘heatstroke’ on Sunday.

The government, however, closed all secondary-level schools, colleges, madrassahs, and technical educational institutions in five districts, including Dhaka, for Monday.
