Mamunul Haque, former joint secretary general of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, on Friday released from the Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur on bail after three years.
The Islamic preacher was arrested in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area on April 18, 2021.
Kashimpur Central Jail’s senior jail superintendent Subrata Kumar Bala said that Mamunul was released from the jail at about 10:00am. He was facing 37 cases in different police stations and got bail in 36 of those at various times. He was granted bail by the High Court in the last case on Thursday.
Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury, central leader of Hefazat-e-Islam and others welcomed Mamunul with flowers after his release from prison.
On April 3, 2021, Mamunul was confined in a resort at Sonargaon in Narayanganj when he was spending time with a woman. His arrest came 15 days after the incident.
On April 30, 2021, the woman appeared at Sonargaon police station and filed a case against Mamunul, alleging that he had raped her with the promise of marriage.
