Remal likely to make landfall with 110-120 kmph speed

The cyclonic storm Remal is very likely to cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara by 26 May midnight as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with a wind speed of 110-120 gusting to 135 kmph, according to IMD.

Storm surge of about one meter above astronomical tide is likely to inundate low-lying areas of coastal West Bengal and 3-4 m above astronomical tide is likely to inundate low-lying areas of coastal Bangladesh around the time of landfall, it said.

The Depression over East-central Bay of Bengal moved north-northeastwards with a speed of 15 kmph during past 6 hours, intensified into a Deep Depression and lay centered at 6am of 25 May, 2024 over East-central Bay of Bengal near latitude 17.6°N and longitude 89.7°E, about 490 km south of Khepupara (Bangladesh), about 380 km south-southeast of Sagar Islands (West Bengal) and 530 km south-southeast of Canning (West Bengal).

It is very likely to continue to move north-northeastwards and intensify into a Cyclonic Storm over east-central Bay of Bengal during the next 12 hours. Subsequently, it would move nearly northwards, intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by 26 May morning. Continuing to move nearly northwards, thereafter it is very likely to cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara by 26 May midnight as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with a wind speed of 110-120 gusting to 135 kmph.
