Former India batter Virender Sehwag slammed Shakib al Hasan for his poor performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup, stating that the Bangladesh all-rounder should consider retirement from International cricket.

Shakib has been struggling in T20 format for a while and his struggle continues in the T20 World Cup as well as he scored only eight and three runs in the last two encounters.

He also underperformed in the previous two T20 World Cups, scoring 131 runs in six matches in 2021 and only 44 runs in five matches in the last T20 World Cup.

In the recent match against South Africa, Shakib scored three runs during their 114-run chase and remained wicket-less.

The all-rounder bowled just one over where he conceded six runs and didn’t get a wicket and got out for three, getting caught off of Anrich Nortje after top-edging a pull shot.

After the Tigers lost the match by four runs, Sehwag laid into Shakib, criticising him for going for an extravagant shot when his team needed him to remain at the wicket and said the all-rounder should’ve been dropped from the T20 side a long time ago.

Sehwag suggested that Shakib should do justice to his work and perform for the team, being the most experienced player of the squad.

‘If you are picked in the World Cup squad for your experience, then show the worth of it. Take some in the wicket for a while. You are not Adam Gilchrist or Mathew Hayden. You are a Bangladeshi player…Hook-pulls are not your strength. You play according to your strength, at least stay in the middle’ said Sehwag in a show hosted by Cricbuzz.

‘Back in the last World Cup, I thought he should not be picked for the T20 format. Time for retirement came a long time ago. You are such a senior player, you were captain of this team, so you should be ashamed of your stat. You should announce yourself that enough is enough, I’m retiring from this format,’ he added.
