Rail communication between Rajshahi and the rest of the country remained suspended as a group of Rajshahi University students on Monday blocked the rail tracks near the university central graveyard demanding cancellation of the High Court order that reinstated 30 per cent quotas for freedom fighters’ children and grandchildren in government jobs.
Witnesses said that the students blocked the rail tracks under the Rajshahi University of Enigeering and Technology overpass at about 11:30am and staged a sit-in programme there to press home their demand till filing this report at about 1:10pm.
Abdul Karim, station manager of Rajshahi Rail Station, told New Age that due to the students’ strike, intercity Dhumketu Express Train had been stranded at Haryana rail station while Kapotakkha Express Train at Sardah Road rail station.
He said that they were afraid of having a train schedule disaster if the students did not leave the rail tracks immediately.
