Law minister Anisul Huq said on Tuesday that the government would consider empowering the judicial inquiry commission that was formed to probe into the killings of six people on July 16 to look into all reported deaths in students’ protests.
‘We [the government authorities] are investigating the killings and violence after July 16. We will take a look into the matter if the commission can be empowered to investigate these incidents,’ the law minister told New Age on Tuesday night.
On July 18, the government constituted a one-member Judicial Inquiry Commission, headed by Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman, to investigate ‘the reasons behind the deaths of six people on July 16 and identify the persons responsible’ for the killings.
The commission on Tuesday requested editors of various newspapers to provide its secretariat officer, Tanvir Ahmed, by July 30 with two copies of newspapers from July 4 to July 18.
Tanvir, however, told New Age that the commission might cover the incidents that took place after July 16, but it would depend on the chairman of the commission.
The cabinet division, in a circular, said that the commission would submit its investigation report to the government within 30 days.
