BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has received a renewed passport.
Shairul Kabir Khan, the party’s media wing member, confirmed the matter to the media on Wednesday.
Khaleda Zia’s Personal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar received the renewed machine-readable passport (MRP) on her behalf on Tuesday night, he said.
The BNP chief, now undergoing treatment for various ailments, was released on executive order on Tuesday, a day after Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of prime minister and fled the country amid massive protests.
Khaleda Zia was convicted in two corruption cases in 2018 and since then, she had been serving her sentence in the Old Dhaka Central Jail.
Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, on 25 March 2020, the government temporarily freed her from jail through an executive order suspending her sentence on the condition that she would stay in her Gulshan residence and would not leave the country.
Her sentence was suspended several times – each time for six months.
On Tuesday, a gazette notification by the home ministry said the president exempted the punishment awarded to the former prime minister in two cases and that she was released.
