Nobel Peace Prize winner Professor Muhammad Yunus who returned to Bangladesh from France Thursday afternoon to lead the country’s interim government said that his first work would be restoring law and order in the country and bringing back faith in people’s minds.
He made the comment while addressing a press briefing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka where he landed minutes after 2:00pm.
Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman, chiefs of the three services, students of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and civil society representatives welcomed Professor Yunus.
He said that a new victory had been earned in Bangladesh through revolution.
‘Young people have made it possible. We express our gratitude to them,’ he said in tears.
He remembered the sacrifice of Abu Sayeed who was killed in Rangpur during the recent student movement.
‘Anarchy and disorder are the biggest enemies,’ he said.
During the press briefing, the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement were seen beside the Nobel laureate.
About the current situation in the country, he said, ‘Please keep faith on me. No one will be attacked.’
Yunus was named as interim leader following talks among military officials, civic leaders and student activists.
The new interim government, after a student-led uprising that ended the 15-year rule of Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina, is expected to take oath at about 8:00pm on Thursday.
