Prices of rice, vegetables go up

The prices of rice and some vegetables, including green chillies went up while the prices of broiler chicken and eggs decreased slightly on the kitchen markets in the capital Dhaka over the week ending Friday.

Traders said that the prices of all varieties of rice went up on the retail market as wholesalers and mill owners increased the price of the staple food.

 

They also said that the prices of vegetables decreased significantly in the past week but the prices of some of the items started to soar due to increased demand.

According to the retailers, although the prices of some of the vegetables increased slightly, they still remained lower than what they were in the second half of July.

The prices of rice increased by Tk 2 a kilogram over the week and its coarse varieties sold for Tk 54–56 a kilogram on Friday.

Lower-grade Miniket sold for Tk 67-72 a kilogram over the week.

The fine variety of Miniket sold for Tk 78–82 a kilogram and Najirshail for Tk 80–85 a kilogram on Friday.

The prices of some of the vegetables increased by Tk 10 a kilogram on the city markets on Friday.

Aubergine sold for Tk 60-80 a kilogram, papaya for Tk 35-40 a kilogram, bitter gourd for Tk 70-80 a kilogram, gourd for Tk 50-60 apiece, okra for Tk 50-60 a kilogram and pointed gourd for Tk 50-60 a kilogram on the day.

The prices of green chillies increased by Tk 40-60 a kilogram and the item sold for Tk 240-260 a kilogram in the city on Friday.

Potatoes sold for Tk 60-65 a kilogram on the day.

The prices of broiler chicken decreased by Tk 10-15 a kilogram and the item sold for Tk 165-175 a kilogram on Friday.

Locally bred hens sold for Tk 600–650 a kilogram on the day.

Sonalika variety of chicken sold for Tk 320–330 a kilogram in the city on Friday.

The price of eggs decreased by Tk 2 a hali (four pieces) and the items sold for Tk 45-48 a hali in the city over the week ending Friday.

The prices of onion also remained high over the week and the local variety of onions sold for Tk 110-120 a kilogram while the imported variety sold for Tk 120-130 a kilogram on the day.

The prices of fish decreased by Tk 20-30 a kilogram on the city’s kitchen markets on Friday.

Rohita sold for Tk 300-400 a kilogram and Katla for Tk 300–380 a kilogram, depending on size and quality.

Pangas sold for Tk 200–220 a kilogram and Tilapia for Tk 220–2400 a kilogram on Friday.
