At least 50 named and 1000 to 1200 unnamed leaders and activists of Bangladesh Awami League, including its presidium member and Rajshahi City Corporation former mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, were sued in a case for killing a student in indiscriminate firing during recent student protests.
Rana Islam, younger brother of the deceased student Raihan Ali, filed the case with Boalia Model Police Station on early Tuesday, said SM Masud Pervej, officer-in-charge of the police station.
Along with AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, Rajshahi metropolitan AL general secretary Dabul Sarkar, Rajshahi metropolitan Juba Dal general secretary Tawrid Al Masud Rony and leader Jahirul Haque Rubel, Rajshahi metropolitan Bangladesh Chhatra League president Rashik Dutt and former general secretaries Mahmudul Hasan Rajib and Roky Kumar Ghosh, and Rajshahi University BCL general secretary Asadullah Hil Galib were also named in the case.
According to the case statement, Raihan Ali along with other students under the banner of the Student Movement Against Discrimination brought out a peaceful procession in Rajshahi on August 05.
When the procession reached Alupotti area in the city, AL and JL men who took position earlier with firearms, machetes and knives, attacked the students’ procession and opened fire on them randomly, leaving one dead on the spot and over hundred injured.
‘When Raihan went to rescue the bullet-hit students, JL leader Jahirul Haque Rubel shot him on the head’, the case statement read, adding that Raihan died from his injuries while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on August 8.
